perks and benefits

Lots of jobs will have perks and hidden benefits that will not only improve your work life but some can add financial value to your basic salary.

When you’re looking for work, how do you find out about workplace perks?

If there are specific financial perks to a job, most employers will state this in their job advertisement. But if you’re at the interview stage, it’s not unusual to ask if there are any workplace perks/benefits on offer to employees.

If you’re in work and you feel confident your company values you, you shouldn’t be afraid to ask for a perk or benefit. Most employers would prefer to provide additional benefits (where possible) rather than lose a good employee. Take a look at this article for some advice on how to ask for job perks.

And if your employer is distributing free tickets, meals or goodies don’t try to play it cool. It could come across as disinterest and you could end up missing out – make sure your employer knows you’re up for all perks and benefits!

Don’t be too selective – it’s give and take on both sides. Take an interest in all activities, not just the ones that you’re particularly interested in. If possible, try to offer something of yourself to your employer – if you need to stay over to finish a task, do this with good grace, it will make your employer more willing to consider you when freebies are on offer.

For job hunters out there, here are some of the benefits you might get in certain professions:

Media and journalism: From free tickets, samples, better seats at events to travel and food expenses – these are just some of the perks that you could expect as part of your job. If it’s your job to talk/write about a certain event or product, chances are you’ll get something free!

Leisure industry: Free stays in new hotels, complimentary tickets to shows, theme parks etc. – depending on your level of entry, the benefits could be quite significant.

Driving: You might not think it’s a glamourous career – but there’s a huge drive in recruitment for drivers. And as an added benefit, if you’re doing long-haul stints, your employer might put you up in nice hotels (and it’s also a chance to see different towns and cities).

IT/Technical roles: Good training packages and career progression are often on offer with these roles. A win-win for you and your bank balance!

Lots of employers will also have paid overtime schemes that can boost your basic salary. Take a look at our job search and if you want to check if there’s any added benefits, get in touch with our friendly team.
